6/27/2023 0 Comments Jeannie gunn we of the never neverWhat follows is a rural romance, punctuated with occasional lyrical descriptions of the surrounds of the Elsey. The idea of introducing a white woman into the outback of the Northern Territory of the time met with opposition from all directions, and with flurries of telegrams from the men of the Elsey, but on she travelled, proving to be resilient and energetic. Shortly after their marriage, Jeannie Gunn (to be dubbed "the Missus") and her husand, Aeneas Gunn "the Maluka", travelled to Darwin then into the Katherine to take up the management of the Elsey Cattle Station. The primary concession to fiction was that she fictionalised the names of many of the real-life characters that featured in her life at the time, giving them names like "the Sanguine Scott", "the Fizzer", "the Quiet Stockman" and "the Dandy". The book was published as a novel but draws on the author’s own experience in settling on the Elsey Station way out in the "back blocks" of the Katherine region of the Northern Territories of Australia early in the 20th century. It is considered by many as a classic of Australian writing. We of the Never Never is the second book written by Jeannie Gunn under the name of “Mrs Aeneas Gunn”.

And as if he could actually hear her heart beating, he turned. Perfectly shaped, from shoulder to waist to thigh. The line of him was eloquent, fine as any sculpture. He was standing at the window, looking out at nothing again. It's of course just a coincidence that she'd accidentally discovered a few nights earlier that their houseguest, the notorious Duke of Falconbridge-who has gone from dark legend to unnervingly observant nuisance to wry ally to a source of sensual fascination in a matter of days-never sleeps until after midnight. Genevieve Eversea tells herself the reason she's wandering the house after midnight is that she's in search of just the right book to help her sleep. WHAT? When was the last time you went for a swim in the lake, or for that matter, met anyone who was heading out for a day on the beach? Also, she fails to mention the stench or the annoying bugs that surround this lake! (I've ridden my bike around Antelope Island - probably a more popular tourist attraction than the fine swimming!) As they arrive at the lake she mentions all the people swimming. Then, they take a ride to the Great Salt Lake with the polygamist doctor and his wives, which also happen to be heading there for a swim. The mom faints in the post office and awakens to a polygamist doctor and his three wives, one of which is a nurse. She says the religion is stifling - no description as to why. Next, when the mom and daughter arrive in Salt Lake she gives an AWFUL description of the people and the main attraction - the Great Salt Lake. The book is written from five different perspectives - which would be fine but she doesn't go in chronological order and she doesn't consistenly date the entries. Jodi Picoult has written too many books too quickly - she's lacking a good story and apparently doesn't research her material. 6/26/2023 0 Comments The Jumbies by Tracey BaptisteRecruited by a magical bird to thwart encroaching creatures, an insecure teen explores her sexual identity. Baptiste never quite manages to control the story’s pacing, though, and certain elements in the ending feel arbitrary.ĭespite flaws, this is a book worth reading simply for its originality The novel is based on a Haitian folk tale, according to the author’s note, and it’s refreshing to see a fantasy with its roots outside Europe. In order to fight Severine-who, sympathetically, only wants a family but is bent on turning humans to jumbies to get one-Corinne must rely not only on her own strength, but that of newfound friends. It’s never satisfactorily explained why Severine (as Corinne’s jumbie aunt calls herself) seeks out her niece, nearly a decade after her sister’s death. The third-person narration tells the back story-in bits and pieces-of this jumbie, who reveals herself to be Corinne’s mother’s sister. However, this is no ordinary forest: It’s known for being the abode of “jumbies,” creatures “hidden in the shadows, always waiting for their moment to attack.” Though Corinne doesn’t believe in them, a jumbie follows her out of the forest. On All Hallow’s Eve, when a pair of troublemaking brothers tie her deceased mother’s prized necklace to a wild animal, Corinne chases the animal into the forest to retrieve it. Corinne La Mer is a brave 11-year-old growing up on a Caribbean island. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Angus thongs books in orderI went to a party dressed as a stuffed olive. I am very ugly and need to go into an ugly home. In fourteen days the summer hols will be over and then it will be back to Stalag 14 and Oberfuhrer Frau Simpson and her bunch of sadistic 'teachers'. I have a three-year-old sister who may have peed somewhere in my room. I have one of those under-the-skin spots that will never come to a head but lurk in a red way for the next two years. There are six things very wrong with my life: 1. Louise is an international bestselling author and her books can't fail to make you laugh out loud. Now repackaged in a gorgeous new paperback and looking even fabber than ever. Brilliantly funny, teenage angst author Louise Rennison's first book about the confessions of crazy but lovable Georgia Nicolson. In “Divine Comedy,” the epic poem that took Dante more than 10 years to complete, he makes the following reference: The Montagues and the Capulets-the two families at the center of the family rivalry that makes Romeo and Juliet’s love an impossible predicament-were kicking around long before William Shakespeare got a hold of them. William Shakespeare wasn’t the first person to write about the Montagues and the Capulets. Make sure to pick up a paper copy of this famous story since paper’s recycling rate is 68% compared to 15% for e-waste. What is it about this 16th-century play that has had such a lasting impression on readers and audiences? Read on to find out more about William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. While George Cukor’s 1936 film, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 movie, and Baz Luhrmann’s modern (for 1996) adaptation are some of the best known big-screen interpretations of the rivalry between the Montagues and the Capulets, West Side Story is yet another take on the tale. There have been musical versions, opera renditions, and more than 100 film and TV versions of the play. William Shakespeare's tragic story of two star-crossed lovers has been adapted hundreds-if not thousands-of times over the years, and not always exactly in the Bard’s own words. It’s safe to say that there are few people on Earth who don’t know the story of Romeo and Juliet. 6/25/2023 0 Comments The witching hour book seriesBut then, the whole noblesse oblige thing would be really hard to do in real life. I'm never sure if the "Greater Good" means ignoring wrongs because of inconvenient timing. And when her close friend's fiancé was captured and being tortured and she told the friend she had to leave him there for the greater good. There's a couple of scenes that did disturb me when the Princess saw a servant girl being taken to the villainous Prince after she herself refused to go to bed with him and she did nothing to help the girl. There are all the elements of a fairytale with fairies, magic, witchcraft, warriors, dragons and some nasty and evil villains that our Princess has to outwit and battle with the help of our hero, who's the Princess's dream lover. Without knowing her birthright, the orphaned Princess was trained in both warrior and magical arts by some faithful retainers in the hopes that one day she will overthrow the villainous usurper. Another fairytale-ish story about a Princess birthed at the Witching Hour as her parents' kingdom was toppled by an evil man. 6/25/2023 0 Comments Science by Tom JacksonThe team also hopes to find a nearby ancient settlement where the people may have lived. The next stage will be to carry out anthropological and biochemical assessments of the human remains - such as isotope analysis, a look at the differing neutrons in the nuclei of various key elements - to learn more about the diets, mobility and demographics of the people who were buried in the tomb, she said. Danielisová said there is evidence that the dead there were buried at different times, and three graves of people from the Samad culture, who lived thousands of years later, were found nearby. Similar remains were found in a smaller tomb next to the main tomb archaeologists think it was built slightly later. Several "bone clusters" were found in the burial chambers, indicating that the dead had been left to decompose before being deposited in the tomb their skulls were placed near the outside wall, with their long bones pointed toward the center of the chamber. The entire tomb was covered with an ashlar roof, but it has partially collapsed, probably because of the annual monsoon rains. A report on the project said the tomb's walls were made with rows of thin stone slabs, called ashlars, with two circular burial chambers inside divided into individual compartments. 6/25/2023 0 Comments Hex rebecca dinersteinEven consistency is sacrificed for style. The gratuitous descriptions choke.and it can be hard to see the characters through all their quirks.moving about as though with lifeless stage direction and sending up convoluted thought bubbles in their every interaction. The devotional format strains to contain a high volume of bit-part back stories and anecdotal asides that Nell, 'born observant,' records in lieu of scientific data. As it is, the book’s wisest moments read like fortune cookies. Nell might argue that, like a poison and its antidote, such opposites can be more alike than they are different but it would take a better book than Hex to prove it. There’s much that appears self-serious, even as it relishes the twee and bathetic. Meeting the novel on its own terms, then, without expectation, I struggled to gauge what exactly those terms were. I came to Hex, Knight’s second novel, not knowing her previous work. |
